Rapid prototype: from concept to scalable web application
Build an MVP for an early stage startup including design, implementation, and a continuous integration environment.
The Client: Bricleir
Bricleir is a one-stop-shop social network for VCs, startups, and enterprise innovation leaders to discover new partnerships and investments, source new team members and vendors, find new products and attend relevant events.
The Project: Transform a startup's idea into a web app
Bricleir was in the earliest stages of startup development. They had a well thought out concept and some angel funding, but nothing tangible beyond some hand drawn wireframes. They needed a minimum viable product to establish their product-market fit, yet as an early startup lacked any in-house design or technical staff.

Working closely with Ireland Carter, Bricleir’s founder, clockspring helped decide which initial key features to implement as well as design the app’s look and feel. An online task management system was set up so Ireland’s feedback and future requests could be prioritized and tracked. And to facilitate the development process, clockspring created a continuous integration environment that allowed her to quickly review, comment on, and launch features.

Clockspring created an MVP that was a fully functioning web app robust enough to handle a quickly growing customer base and expanding set of features. After its successful initial launch, clockspring continued to work with Bricleir, rolling out new features and supporting the process of bring development in-house. With an efficient engineering pipeline already in place, Bricleir’s new staff could deploy code right away, allowing clockspring to smoothly transfer ownership of app development to the client on their timeframe.

The Implementation:
Clockspring chose to host the application on Heroku, which scales up quickly and requires minimal maintenance, both of which were requirements for this early-stage startup. Combined with test automation, this allowed Bricleir to focus on expanding the product quickly, rather than investing resources in devops.

Using its experience with startups and early stage web app companies, clockspring made recommendations on which metrics to measure and what experimentation to do, producing usage information for better informed decision making as Bricleir iterated on its MVP.

The app includes user and team accounts, subscription purchases, targeted emails, in-app messaging and event scheduling. Companies are able to create initiatives that specify their needs, propose an initiative to a prospective client, or even make introductions or suggest synergies between other parties.

The Requirements:
  • A fully functional and scalable MVP
  • Implement and design including all UI, UX, backend architecture, database design, unit and integration tests
  • Setup web serving architecture
  • Establish code development and publishing pipeline
  • Create continuous integration environment
  • Interview candidates and onboard them, establishing best practices for the growing engineering team
The Technologies Used:
